An Offering of Swans
Dublin: Cuala Press, 1923. First printing, one of only 300 copies printed. Gogarty was an Irish author and politician involved with Sinn Fein. He was kidnapped by militants, but quickly escaped and relocated to London. After two years, he famously returned to Ireland and released two swans in the River Liffey which had been his prior escape route.
Preface by W.B. Yeats. Cuala Press was founded by Elizabeth Yeats, sister of W.B., and played an important role in the Celtic Revival with this book being the first title published. Wrapped in a beige, completely blank and nondescript paper dust jacket.
A slightly bumped corner, some toning to front board and a light tobacco smell, otherwise a well preserved copy. Interior clean with a small Irish national trademark sticker to inside rear board. Dust jacket with many chips and tears, though no other copies on the market advertise a dust jacket - though this may not be original. Very good / Fair. Item #3444
